Justin Townes Earle – Life-weary sound strikes a chord

I’ve been listening to JTE a bunch recently. What strikes me about his sound is that I feel like I’ve stepped back in time when I hear him sing. There’s a weariness – an old soul-ness – to his style that shouldn’t be coming from a guy so young. Of course, his life has already delivered an undue share of hard times and loneliness. Fortunately for us, he knows how and is willing to sing it so we believe.

Here’s “They Killed John Henry” from LaundroMatinee on Vimeo. Mixed and mastered by Perry Stevens. Shot by Dodge and Jeff DuPont. (There are a bunch of other great vids from LaundroMatinee including The Avett Brothers and Joe Pug.)

And here are some live cuts from Earle recorded at Dorpshuis de Furs on September 25, 2007 (downloaded from archive.org.)
