The Bread Art Project is the effort by the Grain Foods Foundation to raise awareness of the increasing problem of hunger in America. For every piece of Bread Art created, $1 is donated to Share Our Strength. The money raised is given in addition to a lump sum ($50,000) that the Foundation has already pledged, up to $100k.
Last year, the first for this effort, 25,000 slices of art were created – $25,000 donated to Share Our Strength. Seems like with a little more promotion we should be able to get that up to 50,000 so we can max out the Foundation’s donation.
According to the organization’s website, “The Grain Foods Foundation is a joint venture of corporations from the baking and milling industries, and allied suppliers formed in 2004. Its mission is to advance public understanding of the beneficial role grain-based foods play in a healthful diet.” In other words, it’s made up of a bunch of corporations, large and small, that want to spread the word about what they do.
I could probably come up with some reasons not to like the practices of some of the companies on the list…
but today, with 17 million children going to bed with hungry bellies, I’m just going to appreciate all of them for helping a whole lot of kids.
