Blogging Against Hunger

As you can see by the badge on the right, I’ve signed on with the United Nations World Food Programme as a Blogger Against Hunger.

Searching the World Food Programme website I found this page about women and hunger. And this quote:

“People often ask: What can be done to defeat hunger? My answer is simple: empower women, because women are the secret weapon to fight hunger.” — WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran

So what value can I add to a situation in which I have no first or even second hand experience? For now, this question: What if your sister or your aunt or your best friend called and told you she and her kids hadn’t eaten in days and circumstances she could not control meant she had no way to get food? What would you do? What would any of us do?

When we put a familiar face on the women around the world who are struggling to feed themselves and their families it is easier to see them for who they are – our sisters and our aunts and our friends – our fellow human beings trying to live and love and care for their families. Tonight, 1 billion people will go to bed hungry. 600 million of them will be women and girls.

Here are 12 things you can do right now to help fight hunger.
